Pickering Town 1-3 Hull City U23s: Match Report

29 July 2021

Hull City U23s secured their second win of pre-season with a 3-1 victory over Pickering Town. Despite initially going behind, a brace from Will Jarvis and a composed finish from Josh Hinds secured the Tigers the victory.

Richard Naylor and Andy Dawson made seven changes to the starting XI that defeated North Ferriby 3-1 in the Billy Bly Memorial Trophy. Harry Fisk replaced Harvey Cartwright between the sticks, while Tom Nixon captained the team.

It was the hosts that got off to a fast start as they opened the scoring on four minutes. Don Holdsworth’s low cross picked out Tom Alngohuro, who placed his effort into the bottom corner. The Tigers tried to respond through Louis Beckett, but his effort was well-blocked.

Nixon was next to take aim, after a good one-two with McCauley Snelgrove, but his low shot was held by the Pickering goalkeeper. At the other end, former Academy graduate Ben Clappison almost doubled the hosts’ lead, with his towering header going narrowly wide.

Following that chance, Hinds finished a well-executed counter-attack to give the Tigers an equaliser. The striker raced through on goal and converted his one-on-one with a delicate finish. Snelgrove almost gave the young Tigers the advantage on two separate occasions shortly after. First, he saw an effort flash wide past the post, before seeing a second attempt blocked by Jason Barnes.

In the second half, Hinds almost got his second of the afternoon as he capitalised on a defensive error, before racing towards goal. However, he drilled his finish narrowly wide.

The Tigers were starting to create the majority of chances as Harry Lovick saw an effort saved, while Sam Deacon sliced his attempt wide of the Pickering goal. Jarvis and Alfie Taylor both then saw their efforts go wide, before Deacon forced a good save from the Pickering goalkeeper.

The perseverance from the young Tigers came in the reward of a penalty after Hinds was fouled. Jarvis stepped up and converted the spot-kick into the bottom corner to give the Tigers a deserved lead.

Pickering tried to respond through substitute Ben Etherington, but his header was pushed over the bar by Tom Macauley, before in the other goal, Jarvis saw his effort saved, while Hinds saw his rebound blocked.

In injury time, Alngohuro thought he found an equaliser for Pickering, but his close-range effort was blocked expertly by Macauley. The Tigers then quickly raced up to the other end of the field as Jarvis finished a great team move with a clinical finish.
