North Ferriby 1-3 Hull City U23s: Match Report

14 July 2021

Hull City U23s secured the Billy Bly Memorial Trophy as they started their pre-season with a 3-1 victory over North Ferriby.

Despite initially falling behind, goals from Louis Beckett, McCauley Snelgrove and Josh Hinds earned the Tigers a well-deserved victory at the Dransfield Stadium.

Richard Naylor and Andy Dawson named a mixture of Under-23s and Under-18s in the matchday squad, which included an unnamed trialist and new signing Tom Nixon.

The Tigers created the first chances of the game as Nixon saw his effort blocked by Niall Tilsley, before Billy Leach couldn’t divert Snelgrove’s cross goalwards. At the other end, Harvey Cartwright held Louis Kirk’s deflected effort, before the Tigers received a penalty.

Referee Matty Wright adjudged that Leach’s shot had hit Levi Tarbotton’s hand and pointed to the spot. Snelgrove stepped up but saw his spot-kick saved by Jordan Douglas.

Matty Jacob was next to take aim, but his effort was blocked by Liam Nelthorpe, before North Ferriby opened the scoring through Tarbotton, after his header was adjudged to have crossed the line.

Five minutes later and the Tigers were back on level terms as Beckett’s close-range finish beat both the efforts of Douglas and Tilsley to score. Nixon then fired two chances off target, before Snelgrove saw his attempt blocked by Tarbotton.

In the second half, Snelgrove tested Douglas from range, before David Robson produced a good save to deny Tom Corner. Snelgrove was denied again moments later after a well-timed challenge by Ben Leyland, before Joel Shortland fired an attempt narrowly wide for North Ferriby.

The Tigers continued to push for a second as Leach and Beckett both saw attempts saved by Douglas, while Sam Deacon fired a shot narrowly wide. Snelgrove then scored the Tigers’ second in the 67th minute as his composed finish found the bottom corner.

North Ferriby searched for an equaliser as Corner fired an attempt over the bar, while Jamie Forrester and Leyland were both denied moments later. The hosts were then reduced to ten men one minute from stoppage time as the Tigers received another penalty.

After Hinds rounded the onrushing Douglas, Leyland brought the striker down and referee Wright pointed to the spot for a second time, showing a straight red card for the Ferriby defender. Hinds stepped up and sent Douglas the wrong way with his spot-kick to secure the Tigers victory and the Billy Bly Memorial Trophy.
