Dawson on U23s North Ferriby Win

14 July 2021

Lead Professional Development Phase Coach Andy Dawson has expressed his delight with how his side competed against North Ferriby.

The young Tigers secured a 3-1 victory over the Northern Counties East League Division One side, courtesy of goals from Louis Beckett, McCauley Snelgrove and Josh Hinds, a result which also secured the Billy Bly Memorial Trophy.

On the Victory…

“I’m really pleased with the result because I thought the lads performed really bravely in and out of possession and they fought well against a very good North Ferriby team. We were very front foot, aggressive in our press and in possession. The boys were really brave. They were willing to take the ball, receive it in tight areas and play it forward and hurt the opposition on many occasions.

“It’s always nice to win a trophy, especially for young players. Every day you want to win and you want to perform to a high standard and it was nice for the team to play for a trophy. We were really pleased with them with the way they performed and it’s a great stepping stone in what will be a long season.”

North Ferriby…

“We always used to play North Ferriby in pre-season when I was a player and they’re always a difficult team. They’re physically strong and that’s the good test when you’re playing young players like we had today. The test was 'can the boys handle the step up in physicality and are they willing to go head to head with them?' and that was the pleasing thing, because they never took a backwards step. The boys were always on the front foot and got into their faces, which can be difficult when you’re playing against strong men. Full credit to the lads as I thought they were brilliant from first to last minute.”

Gateshead Preview…

“Gateshead will be another strong men’s team. They will be full of quality and they play in a really good league, so it’ll be a completely different challenge and one that we will have to work hard for this week. It’s all about the lads learning, so we will watch this game back later in the week and see the points that we did well and things that we can improve on.”
