Sheffield United U23’s 4-2 Hull City U23’s: Match Report

21 January 2021

Hull City U23’s suffered a 4-2 defeat against Sheffield United in their latest U23 Professional Development League fixture.

Despite Ahmed Salam and Sean McLoughlin scoring, the Tigers succumbed to defeat at The Technique Stadium.

Tony Pennock took the reigns in the dugout and he named a completely rotated starting eleven to the team that were defeated 3-1 against Birmingham City last time out, as first-team members McLoughlin, Brandon Fleming, Dan Batty, Thomas Mayer and James Scott all gained vital minutes.

The Tigers had the first chance of the game as Billy Chadwick forced Marcus Dewhurst into a smart save with a low drive. The Blades then took the lead on the eighth minute as Harry Boyes’ corner was flicked on by Sam Graham for Kacper Lopata to head in at the back post.

Salam almost brought the Tigers level as he was played through one-on-one, but his effort was well saved by Dewhurst. At the other end, Antwoine Hackford fired his cross-shot wide, after being played through by Oluwafemi Seriki, before Sheffield doubled their lead as Hassan Ayari finished off a quick counter-attack with a smart finish.

Two minutes later and Sheffield scored their third. After Harvey Cartwright produced a good initial save to deny Boyes, the rebound fell to Hackford who converted from close-range. The Tigers tried to respond before half-time as Chadwick saw his effort saved by the feet of Dewhurst, before Batty fired wide from range.

Sheffield scored their fourth two minutes into the second half as Ayari rifled his effort into the bottom corner. The Tigers continued to push for a goal as Batty tested Dewhurst from range, before Fleming’s low free-kick went narrowly wide.

Salam then pulled one back for the Tigers as he converted a low cross at the back post, before Dewhurst was forced to deny Mayer immediately from the restart. The Austrian came close again moments later, but his low shot curled wide.

McLoughlin scored a second late on, as he headed in from close-range, but it wasn’t enough as the Tigers suffered defeat.
