McCann Praises Tactical Discipline in Stanley Win

19 January 2021

Grant McCann praised the tactical discipline of his Hull City side following the convincing 3-0 win over 10-man Accrington.

Mallik Wilks’ 12th goal of the season, Cardiff loanee Gavin Whyte’s first for the club and a penalty from substitute Josh Magennis sent the Tigers top of League One.

And the boss was delighted with how his players carried out the game plan against a Stanley side that have surprised many this season.

“We had to be good tonight,” said McCann. “We were playing against, in my opinion, one of the best teams in the league.

“I thought we were excellent in the first half. Tactically, really good. We made them change their shape in the second half, which was a credit to the players and how they stuck to the plan.

“We possibly could have had another couple of goals in the first half if we were a bit more clinical.

“To go in at 1-0, we felt there was more to come. It was nice to see the second goal come when it did, so quickly after half-time.

“It was good play from Mallik, a good position he took up, he was strong and a great finish from Gavin.

“All in all, we had to be very good tonight against a well-drilled team who don’t change their shape for anyone.

“They haven’t this season and we made them do that tonight and that’s a credit to the players.”
