McCann: ‘A Controlled Performance’

23 January 2021

Grant McCann hailed a “controlled” team display as Hull City romped to a stunning 4-0 victory at promotion rivals Portsmouth.

Two own goals from Jack Whatmough, a George Honeyman tap-in and a Josh Magennis strike earned the table-topping Tigers a statement win at Fratton Park.

And McCann could not have been happier after his side produced arguably their best of the season, against a Pompey side who started the day in third.

“We had to be good coming here today,” said McCann.

“Portsmouth are a very strong team at this level, an excellent team.

“We had to be energetic, we had to match their energy, we had to be aggressive on second balls.

“We had to make sure we were good defensively and I thought we were. That was the carrot for us to go and score some goals at the other end.

“It was a controlled performance.

“Portsmouth were the form team in the league coming into this. They’d only lost once or twice in 15 games. They’d kept clean sheets in their last six games.

“It was going to be difficult and we knew we’d have to be good defensively. We had to be structured in the way we defended.

“They’re high energy in the middle of the park. They’ve got a centre forward I know from Doncaster in (John) Marquis who doesn’t stop running.

“We picked every loose ball up. We played forward, we got our full-backs out. We looked a real threat every time we went forward.”
