Hull City U18’s 0-2 Birmingham City U18’s: Match Report

31 January 2021

Hull City U18’s suffered a 2-0 defeat in their first Professional Development League game of 2021 against Birmingham City.

A brace from Kieran Wakefield secured the visitors all three points at Bishop Burton College.

John Anderson and Matt Hare made six changes to the starting eleven that were defeated 6-1 last time out against Crewe Alexandra. Josh Ward made his long awaited return from injury after three months out, while seven first-year scholars and three members of the Under-16 side were named in the match day squad.

Birmingham opened the scoring after just eight minutes as Wakefield latched onto a long ball before clinically finishing with a low shot into the bottom corner. The visitors pushed for a second moments later as Jordan James forced a save from Thomas Macauley at his near post, before Rico Patterson curled a shot narrowly wide after cutting inside from the left wing.

The Tigers tried to respond through Louis Beckett as he headed narrowly wide from Oliver Green’s free-kick, before Wakefield flashed his cross-shot wide for the visitors just before the half-time interval.

The visitors doubled their lead ten minutes into the second half as Patterson played Wakefield through on goal as he finished from a tight angle to secure his brace.

The Tigers thought they had got one back just past the hour mark as they had an opportunity cleared off the line following a goalmouth scramble, while at the other end, Wakefield was denied his hat-trick following a great save from the onrushing Macauley.

In the other goal, Kobi Brooks produced a good save to deny Rio Dyer, after the Tigers’ winger cut inside from the left wing, before Birmingham substitute Jobe Bellingham hit the post late-on, after connecting with Wakefield’s low cross.
