Hull City are delighted to announce the signing of winger Gavin Whyte on loan from Cardiff City until the end of the season, subject to international clearance.
The 24-year-old has scored 57 goals in 234 career club appearances and been capped 10 times by Northern Ireland.
Born in Belfast, Whyte enjoyed a hugely successful spell with Crusaders between 2014 and 2018, winning three NIFL Premiership titles.
The 2017/18 season was particularly impressive as he scored 24 goals and was named the Ulster Footballer of the Year and the Northern Ireland Football Writers’ Association Player of the Year.
Moving to England with League One Oxford in July 2018, Whyte netted nine goals in 47 matches for the U’s before signing for Cardiff for a seven-figure fee a year later.
He played 30 games in all competitions last season as the Bluebirds reached the Championship play-offs after finishing fifth.
At international level, Whyte featured seven times for the Under-21s before winning his first senior cap against Israel in September 2018, scoring 108 seconds after coming on in a 3-0 win.
He also notched in a 1-1 Nations League draw in Romania and was involved in their Euro 2020 play-off matches against Bosnia-Herzegovina and Slovakia.
Head Coach Grant McCann said: “Gavin will bring pace, energy and directness. He likes to get the ball and run at people.
“He’s a full international and had a good time in Northern Ireland, a really good time at Oxford and followed that up with a move to Cardiff.
“We’ve been searching for a replacement for Hakeeb Adelakun and he will bring real pace and directness to the front three.
“We’re delighted to get him and there was a lot of competition for him. We’re delighted he’s chosen us and he’ll get the fans off their sofas because he’s direct and likes to get at people.”
