McCann: A Strong Team Display

27 February 2021

Grant McCann praised a strong all-round team display as Hull City eased to a comfortable 3-0 victory at AFC Wimbledon.

Penalties from Josh Magennis and Mallik Wilks, either side of a goal from Reece Burke, earned the Tigers a ninth away league win of the season.

“It was a good performance,” said McCann. “I thought we were really calm and controlled in our play.

“We worked off, structurally, a very good shape. We broke with real pace and real energy.

“I was really pleased with the performance and the performance has got us the result.

“We had to be really disciplined out of possession as we were playing against a front four who are capable of hurting any team in this league.

“We had to be good defensively and I thought we were. When we went forward, we looked really exciting and like we could score goals.”

One player McCann was particularly impressed by was Keane Lewis-Potter, who won the spot-kick for the opening goal.

“He was outstanding today, Keane Lewis-Potter,” McCann added.

“Some of the runs he was making, he was causing Darnell Johnson some serious problems and that lad has played for England through the (youth) age groups.

“He’s a good player on loan from Leicester but Keane caused him some real problems, running in between them all afternoon.

“He was unfortunate he didn’t get a goal. He made a good run in the second half and chipped the keeper, just got called offside.

“His performance was excellent."

As well as scoring the opener, his 12thgoal of the campaign, Magennis provided the assist for Burke to net the Tigers’ second.

And McCann believes the Northern Irishman is getting stronger by the week.

“He’s been really good,” McCann commented. “His performance levels have gone up again in the last three-four weeks. He’s in good form.

“His hold-up play was excellent. He showed that at Wigan, he definitely showed that in the first half against Doncaster before we got a wee bit loose in the second half. Today again, excellent.

“He’s getting fitter and fitter. He had a tough time with coronavirus but he’s come back and he’s looking good.”
