Elder: We Need To Stamp Our Authority On The Game

6 February 2021

Callum Elder wants Hull City to leave their mark on the game when they travel to the Pirelli Stadium this afternoon.

The Australian full-back has already provided six assists so far this season, doubling his tally of three in 2019/20, and is still looking to improve on that number for the remainder of the campaign.

“I think the fact that we’re competing at the top end of the league means that we are getting in good positions going forward,” said Elder. “Our style of play means that the manager wants the full backs to get high and contribute in the final third. I’m happy to have done that so far and I feel like I could’ve had a few more, but hopefully in the second half of the season I can repeat the same form and we can get ourselves in a great position.

“It’s one thing getting in those areas but ultimately it’s making sure that the final pass, cross or ball counts. As full backs, we play a big role in the team but it’s up to us to ensure we produce.

“Three seasons ago I was promoted with Wigan from this league so I’ve seen what it takes and the lads are definitely showing that same form at the minute. We’ve got to carry on the way we have been, but we need to keep our heads down and keep our feet on the ground as there’s still so much hard work to be done. It takes a lot of consistency to get promoted and we need to be the team that is doing that.

“We’ve quickly addressed the issues we’ve faced individually and as a team and I truly believe that the response so far has come from working really hard on the training pitch. All the staff are working incredibly hard with the players to make sure that we’re ready on a match day to beat the next opposition.

“Burton are up next and that’s going to be another test. We’re away from home so it’s always hard regardless of whether fans are in stadiums or not so we need to show a collectiveness.

"They’ve made a lot of signings and recruited well in January so they’ll be a vastly different team to the one we faced earlier in the season so they’ll pose a threat but we need to stamp our authority on the game and make sure we come away with the three points.”
