Dawson on U23’s Wigan Defeat

19 February 2021

Andy Dawson has said there’s room for improvement after the Under-23’s suffered a 2-0 defeat against Wigan Athletic.

Goals in each half from Adam Long and Alex Perry condemned the Tigers to defeat in the Professional Development League.

On the defeat…

I thought we werent clinical enough in the final third. I thought Wigan were and credit to them and its a fantastic finish from Alex Perry for their second. We had opportunities with a couple of one-v-ones and weve also had one cleared off the line, but thats part of the game.

“Sometimes if you’re not playing great when you’re attacking and it’s not quite going for you, you try and not concede goals and we’ve conceded two poor goals from two set-pieces. The second is a shot from twenty-five yards and nobody has laid a glove on them, but that’s vital learning for the young players that if you’re not playing well or if you’re not finishing your chances, you try and have that clean sheet mentality and come out of the game with a nil-nil and hopefully they’ll learn from this.”

Learning from First-Team Players…

“It’s brilliant for some of the lads to learn from the first-team players. They would have listened to them throughout the game and they talked to them through different situations like when to step up and it’s great for the younger lads as they’ll learn loads from this game, which is what it’s all about for a young player’s development. It’s all about getting things right, getting things wrong, learning from it and hopefully getting them in and around our first-team which is our main objective.”

Birmingham City Preview…

We’ll need to be better than what we were tonight. The game will pan out in different ways. Theyll be times where were on top and times where theyll create opportunities and we’ll need to be strong and resilient to see those periods through and if we keep working hard and playing the right ball or the right pass at the right time in the final third, we will get the opportunities and the goals will come.”
