Coyle On His Partnership With Wilks & Emmanuel

19 February 2021

Lewie Coyle believes that he is developing a productive partnership with winger Mallik Wilks down the right wing.

Since his introduction into the team, Coyle has linked well with the forward and feels there is a good understanding between the duo from their time together at Leeds United, and also from their meetings as opponents in Sky Bet League One previously.

“There’s a good partnership between myself and Mallik down the right-hand side,” said Coyle. “I knew him before I came to the Club so I know the way he likes to play, and he knows the way I like to play. I’ve also played against him many times so I know what he can do to cause defenders issues.

“I think that link up has been evident so far, so hopefully that can help contribute towards goals and also for him to get back in and defend, which he has been doing and I think our link-up has been a real benefit for the team.”

The 25-year-old was one of two right-backs brought into the Club last summer, and has been in close competition with fellow recruit Josh Emmanuel throughout the season as the duo battle to earn a place in Grant McCann’s team.

But Coyle was full of praise for his fellow right-back and relishes the challenge of competing for his shirt week-in, week-out.

“Josh has been fantastic,” Coyle added. “You only have to look at his start to the season. He’s been great, so for me to have somebody pushing me every day was only something that I thrive from and I have to keep working hard to keep that shirt.

“I couldn’t be in competition with a nicer lad. I think it’s healthy to be fighting for your place with another player. He’s such a great lad and he’s had such a fantastic season.

“I have to work hard to keep my shirt but I think we both bring the best out of each other because we know if one of us isn’t quite at it, there’s somebody there to take your place.”
