Hull City 2-2 Bristol City: Match Report

11 December 2021

Hull City made it six games unbeaten with a 2-2 draw against Bristol City in the Sky Bet Championship. Matty James scored an injury-time equaliser for the visitors, as the points were shared at the MKM Stadium.

Grant McCann named an unchanged starting XI from their last fixture against Reading. The only change was on the substitutes bench as Tom Eaves replaced George Moncur, while Richie Smallwood captained the team on his 50th Hull City appearance.

It was the perfect start for the Tigers as they took the lead after just three minutes. Ryan Longman drove down the left wing before cutting inside on his favoured right-foot to curl an effort past the dive of Daniel Bentley.

On the other wing, Keane Lewis-Potter caused the Bristol City defence problems with a teasing cross, while Mallik Wilks volleyed over from George Honeyman’s delivery. At the other end, Sean McLoughlin produced a vital challenge to deny Antoine Semenyo, before Lewis-potter saw his deflected effort held by Bentley.

The next opportunity of the game fell to Chris Martin, but his volleyed effort deflected behind off Di’Shon Bernard. Longman then searched for his second of the afternoon, but his curling effort went narrowly over the bar, while Wilks was denied one-on-one by Bentley.

Greg Docherty fired an ambitious effort from range wide in the opening minutes of the second half, while Andreas Weimann wasted a good opportunity for the visitors moments later.

The Robins drew level on 54 minutes as a scramble inside the penalty area saw Semenyo initially hit the post with an effort, before firing home the rebound from close range.

Following the equaliser, both teams had few chances as they searched for a winner, with Han-Noah Massengo seeing his effort blocked before Tyler Smith headed wide from Lewis-Potter’s cross.

The Tigers regained the lead on the 79th minute through Honeyman’s quick reactions. After Lewis-Potter saw his initial effort well saved by Bentley, the midfielder poked the rebound past Bentley into the far corner.

Smith searched for a third goal late on for the Tigers, but his attempt curled wide, before James scored a last-minute equaliser for the Robins, drilling a right-footed effort into the bottom corner.
