We are delighted to announce that Garreth Roberts will be the next legend to be inducted into the Hull City Hall of Fame.
Born and raised in Hull, one-club man Roberts was a prominent figure when first joining Hull City as a youngster in 1978.
During his 13-year spell, Roberts tasted automatic promotion twice, as well as reaching the final of the Associate Members Cup in 1984. The midfielder also won the club’s Player of the Season award twice, first for the 1980/81 season and again for the 1984/85 campaign. He is currently second in the club’s all-time appearance list with 487, behind fellow Hall of Fame member Andy Davidson.
Roberts made his debut as an 18-year-old in a 4-1 victory against Bury on the 10th of March 1979, before scoring his first goal later that month in a 2-2 draw away at Carlisle United. In his debut season, Roberts made 19 appearances in Division Three, scoring three goals, before amassing an impressive 48 appearances in his first full season, netting four goals.
His performances and influence in midfield later rewarded him with the captain’s armband, as he led the Tigers to automatic promotion from Division Four at the end of the 1982/83 season, finishing in second place. In that season, Roberts made 50 appearances in all competitions, scoring six goals.
The following season, Roberts produced his best goalscoring return, netting 14 goals in all competitions from 47 appearances. The midfielder then led Brain Horton’s side to promotion from Division Three at the end of the 1984/85 season, making 29 league appearances and scoring three goals as the club finished third.
In the next five seasons, Roberts consistently made 30+ appearances for Hull City, before injuries saw him switch positions to sweeper and full-back. His last appearance came on the 22nd of December 1990 against Charlton Athletic, before he hung up his boots in 1991.
Following his tremendous service to the club, Roberts was rewarded with a testimonial match at Boothferry Park against Tottenham Hotspur in 1992, with the midfielder converting a penalty in the fixture.
Roberts now joins Ian Ashbee, Billy Bly, Chris Chilton, Andy Davidson, Pete Skipper, Ken Wagstaff and Dean Windass in the Hull City Hull of Fame.
