Crewe Alexandra U18s 1-0 Hull City U18s: Match Report

6 December 2021

Hull City U18s were knocked out of the FA Youth Cup at the third round stage after a narrow 1-0 defeat against Crewe Alexandra U18s.

Matus Holicek’s finish late in the second half separated the two sides at the Mornflake Stadium.

John Anderson and Billy Clarke made four changes to the starting XI that suffered defeat against Coventry City in the Professional Development League last time out. Tom Macauley replaced Ben Voase between the sticks, while Jevon Mills, Harry Wallis and Aman Panesar came in for Sam Deacon, Rio Dyer and Kyle Fanning.

Macauley was called into action early on to punch away Joel Tabiner’s effort at his front post, before Tom Booth held Jake Brown’s deflected shot in the other goal. Henry Curtis saw his cross-shot deflect behind, while Keegan Green struck an effort wide after initial good passing play from the Tigers.

At the other end, Holicek fired over for Crewe, while Mills headed over from Green’s corner delivery. Both teams had chances in the latter stages of the half as Tabiner’s curling free-kick went wide for the hosts, before Sincere Hall and Holicek drilled shots over the bar.

In the second half, Connor O’Riordan headed over from a set-piece delivery, before Macauley denied Max Woodcock. O’Riordon fired off target again just past the hour mark, while Connor Salisbury tested Macauley from close range.

The hosts continued to create chances as Holicek drilled his half-volley narrowly wide past the post, before Sean Lawton failed to convert Tabiner’s delivery at the back post Woodcock then volleyed over from close range, before Hall tested Booth from range with a curling shot.

Crewe took the lead in the 84th minute as Holicek found the bottom corner through a crowd of Hull City defenders. The Tigers pushed for an equaliser late on through Curtis, but the full-back’s shot was pushed over the bar by Booth.
