Hull City U23s secured their first win of the 2021/22 season with a 3-1 victory over 10-man Millwall.
Despite going behind, a brace of penalties from Harry Wood and an injury-time finish from Will Jarvis secured the Tigers all three points in the Professional Development League.
Tony Pennock took charge of the team and named a very strong squad for the fixture. First-team players Andy Cannon, Tom Huddlestone and Sean McLoughlin featured, while there was a start for recent senior debutant Will Jarvis.
Both teams kept possession well in the opening minutes, with Oliver Green’s pass for Jarvis being intercepted well by Millwall’s George Walker.
The visitors then opened the scoring from the penalty spot as Junior Tiensia drew a foul from Wood. Sean O’Brien stepped up and despite Harvey Cartwright going the right way, dispatched his spot-kick into the bottom corner.
The Tigers searched for an equaliser as Andy Smith headed wide from McLoughlin’s delivery, before Jarvis hit the side-netting from a tight angle after a great run into the Millwall penalty area.
Andy Cannon and Wood both then fired chances off target for the Tigers early in the second half, before Millwall almost doubled their lead at the other end, with Jayden Davis hitting the crossbar with his close-range effort.
The Tigers then hit the woodwork moments later as neat passing play on the left wing created a shooting opportunity for Wood, but his right-footed effort hit the left-hand post before being cleared away. McCauley Snelgrove was next to take aim, after connecting with Brandon Fleming’s cross, but his volleyed effort was saved by Joe Wright, before the linesman on the far side raised his flag against Snelgrove.
With Pennock’s team pushing hard for the equaliser, they received the perfect opportunity after winning a spot-kick of their own. Fleming cut inside onto his right foot, before seeing his shot blocked by the hand of Arthur Penney. The Millwall midfielder received a straight red card, before Wood dispatched his spot kick confidently.
Three minutes later and the Tigers received another penalty after Josh Hinds was fouled following a great run. Wood stepped up again and sent Wright the wrong way to secure his brace and give the Tigers the lead.
Snelgrove and Huddlestone both searched for a third late on as Snelgrove fired wide from the edge of the penalty area, before Huddlestone hit the post with his right-footed effort from 25 yards. In the third minute of injury time, Jarvis did score a third for the Tigers, as he converted Fleming’s low cross from close range.
