Sheffield Wednesday U23s 3-0 Hull City U23s: Match Report

6 April 2021

A youthful Hull City U23s suffered a 3-0 defeat against an experienced Sheffield Wednesday U23 side in the Professional Development League. Goals from Andre Green, Elias Kachunga and an own goal condemned the Tigers to defeat at the Middlewood Road Training Ground.

Richard Naylor and Andy Dawson rotated the entire starting XI to the one that defeated Crewe Alexandra 3-0 last time out. There was only four recognised Under-23 members starting as David Robson, Matty Jacob, James Berry and Henri Kumwenda featured alongside a mixture of first and second-year scholars.

The hosts hit the woodwork with the opening attempt of the match as Green’s curling effort smashed the crossbar before going behind. Robson was then called into action moments later to deny Alex Hunt twice in quick succession, before Kachunga saw his effort hit the post after he connected with Green’s low cross.

At the other end, Berry tested Josh Render at his near post, before the winger forced another save out of the Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper after connecting with Josh Ward’s cross. The hosts then opened the scoring with two minutes left to play of the first half as Green curled an effort into the far top corner, before resolute defending by the Tigers on the goalline denied the Owls a second.

In the second half, Robson produced a good save to deny Ciaran Brennan, before Oliver Green blocked Liam Shaw’s attempt. The hosts then scored their second as Ryan Galvin’s cross was converted by Jevon Mills into his own net, before they scored their third just two minutes later. After Robson did well to save Shaw’s attempt, the rebound fell to Kachunga who converted from close range.

The Tigers continued to push for a goal late on as Louis Beckett fired his attempt over the bar, after he connected with Harry Lovick’s cross, before the hosts missed an opportunity to score a fourth in stoppage time as Charles Hagan fired wide.
