Honeyman Praises Defensive Resilience

27 September 2020

Midfielder George Honeyman praised the way Hull City defended as a team during their 2-0 win over Northampton Town.

The Tigers made it three wins and three clean sheets in their opening three Sky Bet League One matches, and Honeyman was delighted with the way Grant McCann’s side managed the game.

“Any time you come away from home and get three points is very satisfying,” he said. “The way that we defended as a team is something we’re all very proud of.

“We’re all going out there, one to eleven, and knowing that we need to defend as a team and that’s our main goal. We know that we can score goals and we know that if we can keep a clean sheet every week, we’ll be a very successful team.

“I thought our back four especially was outstanding - the way that they held the line up today against a team like Northampton who thrive on putting pressure on the back line was outstanding.

“We knew we needed to be aggressive and keep the defensive line high. Once we got the ball we just wanted to show our quality and take our chances when they came about.

“I thought we managed the game really well and as I mentioned earlier, the lads at the back marshalled that really well.”

In the absence of Club captain Richie Smallwood, Honeyman was handed the armband for the Northampton match - something that the midfielder was proud to have been awarded.

“It’s a nice honour to have,” said Honeyman. “I’m always proud to lead the team out but it doesn’t change my approach to the game and when we’ve got a team all pushing in the same direction, it’s an easy team to lead out and it was a privilege to do that today.

“Once you start getting feeling of clean sheets and winning games, it becomes a very powerful thing in a dressing room and as a squad we’re in a very good place. We want to keep building on that and keep pushing each other so we have a successful season.

“It’s been a good start but it’s all about consistency now, we have to keep pushing ourselves in terms of our standards and making sure that we keep bringing that quality, tempo and aggression to the table.”
