McCann: Pleased with the Result, not the Performance

20 October 2020

Grant McCann was pleased with the result but not the performance as Hull City edged to a 1-0 victory over AFC Wimbledon.

Keane Lewis-Potter’s close-range finish in first half injury time secured a third successive 1-0 home win and lifted the Tigers to the top of League One.

“It’s another win, clean sheet and we're top of the league,” said McCann.

“In terms of the performance, not good enough. We weren’t at the races.

“I can never fault the players’ attitude and endeavour in terms of the desire to defend their goal but we were just off it tonight in terms of our own general play.

“Too many lacklustre passes, too many loose touches. When we got into the final third, it just fizzled out.

“It’s probably the worst we’ve been this season in terms of our performance. But we kept going and we ended up keeping a clean sheet and winning the game.

“There are teams that will come and play in a certain way. They flooded the midfield, 5-4-1, and were very difficult to break down at times.

“We kept the ball reasonably well in the first half in our own defensive third, but when we got into the attacking third it just seemed to fizzle out and break down.

“We didn’t have too many chances to get that goal but we scored from another set-play – it was a great ball from Callum Elder and it was nice to see Keano score another goal.

“We’ve got a lot to do – we know that. It’s only early in the season but we’ve started it quite well.”
