McCann: we stuck to the game plan

21 November 2020

Grant McCann was delighted with the way his Hull City side executed the game plan in the 3-1 win at MK Dons.

A brace from Josh Magennis and a header from substitute James Scott secured a fifth consecutive win in all competitions and moved the Tigers top of League One.

“It’s a good win,” said McCann.

“We knew they were a good team in terms of the way they pass the ball and play.

“We had to set traps in the game and try to force them into areas where we could try and counter and break on them.

“I thought it worked really well, particularly for the first two goals.

“We wanted (Richard) Keogh to have the ball. We wanted him to try to play through. He did that and there were numerous opportunities for us to break and play in behind him.

“You saw it more so in the first half. Second half, they changed their shape to combat us, two forwards up there to try and stop up and get back in the game.

“I thought that suited us because we could go man for man in midfield, and I’d back our midfield against anyone’s in this league with the energy and experience we’ve got in there.

“It was nice to see the boys sticking to the plan, making sure we got the job done and come away with the three points.”
