Dawson on U23’s Coventry Victory

1 December 2020

Andy Dawson says he was delighted with the hard work his side produced after a 2-0 victory over Coventry City.

Goals from Josh Hinds and McCauley Snelgrove sealed all three points for the Tigers at Bootham Crescent.

On the result…

“I’m really pleased for the lads as they worked extremely hard. I thought to a man they pressed with intent and aggression to win the ball back high and they got their rewards by doing that. They created lots of opportunities and scored two very good goals, but we’ll keep working, because there was more opportunities that we could have scored from. However, if we keep getting in them areas and keep creating them quality of chances, we’ll keep scoring goals.

“The clean sheet is also important as it’s a mentality that runs through everybody from the top down which is fantastic and you could even hear them at the end saying clean sheet, clean sheet which is again a big part of a young player’s development and learning, because it does matter.

Mixture of U23’s & U18’s featuring…

“We had a few scholars involved and we had a few first-year professionals and we also had two or three older players and they’re all part of this group to become better individually and collectively and get to where they want to be. It’s great when they show that attitude and application and it’s great for us as coaches and staff on the sideline that when they come and apply themselves in that manner, they get their rewards and hopefully that’ll stand them in good stead going forward.

“For example, Danny (Lupano) has come back from his loan spell and he’s come back a different player. The move gave him experience of playing men’s football as it’s different to U23’s football. He’s gone straight out to King’s Lynn in the National League which is a very tough, very physical and very strong league and hopefully, he’ll help the younger ones through the experiences he’s had.

Playing at Bootham Crescent…

“It was great for the team as some of the players haven’t been at Bootham before and it’s great experience for them, because it’s an old ground and it’s been a team that has been in the Football League and even though recently they’ve been in the Non-League, you can see that York is a good city and York City is a good football club and I’m sure it’ll be one that’ll move forward soon and for our players, it’s great to play at these sorts of grounds.

“It was especially great to see Grant McCann and the rest of the first-team coaching staff here tonight as it’s a great opportunity for the players to go and perform and it’s pleasing for us Academy staff that they show what they’ve done to them. I spoke with Grant after the game which is great and the team have done themselves a real favour with the performance they showed.”
