Hull City rounded off their pre-season fixtures with a good run-out against a Manchester United Under-23 side on Saturday, winning 2-0 at the MKM Stadium.
Two goals in as many second half minutes from Tom Huddlestone and Tom Eaves earned the win, as plenty more players got minutes under their belt.
Grant McCann turned to the players that didn’t feature in Friday night’s fixture at Sunderland for this one, with new loan signing from Manchester United Di’Shon Bernard making his first appearance for the Tigers. The side was captained by young defender Andy Smith, while Huddlestone was given a further opportunity to gain some match fitness as he continues to train with the Club.
Huddlestone lined up against his former Tigers colleague Paul McShane who featured as an over-age player in the United side following his recent addition to their coaching staff.
McShane had a chance to open the scoring for the visitors when a near-post corner was flicked on but the defender headed over at the far post.
The home side’s first chance came from a free kick won and taken by George Moncur. Eaves flicked a deflected effort on for Bernard, who saw his volley go wide.
James Scott saw a low strike kept out by United goalkeeper Dermot Mee, while Smith saw an effort go just wide from inside the box.
Huddlestone curled a shot wide from around 25 yards out just before half time as it remained goalless at the break.
Moncur sent a shot over the bar early in the second half at the end of a nice passing move before the deadlock was broken by a lovely left-footed Huddlestone strike from 25 yards in the 58th minute.
It became two goals in as many minutes as the Tigers doubled the lead on the hour. Smith crossed from the right and Eaves got ahead of his marker and the goalkeeper to head into the net.
Substitute Josh Hinds went close shortly after replacing Scott before United goalkeeper Mee was sent off nine minutes from time for a professional foul on Eaves after being dispossessed on the edge of his area.
Hinds almost added a third late on, but the job was already done ahead of the real action getting underway next weekend.
