Hull City 0-2 Barnsley: Match Report

22 February 2022

Two first-half goals saw Hull City suffer defeat in the Yorkshire derby as Barnsley came out 0-2 winners at the MKM Stadium.

Finishes from Callum Styles and Carlton Morris secured the Tykes all three points in the Sky Bet Championship.

Shota Arveladze made three changes to his starting XI that drew 1-1 against Queens Park Rangers last time out. Harvey Cartwright made his first league start in-between the sticks, while Brandon Fleming and Regan Slater were recalled for Callum Elder and Alfie Jones, with the latter being named on the bench. There was also a place on the substitutes bench for academy goalkeeper David Robson.

Keane Lewis-Potter wasted a glorious chance in the opening few minutes as he was picked out by Di’Shon Bernard, but the winger sliced his attempt wide. At the other end, Amine Bassi had a goal ruled out for offside, while Cartwright produced a decent save to push away Domingos Quina’s effort.

Barnsley opened the scoring on 27 minutes as a good team move found Styles at the back post to rifle home from close-range. The Tykes looked to double their advantage as Claudio Gomes tested Cartwright from distance, before the Tigers’ goalkeeper held Matty Wolfe effort at the second attempt. Lewis-Potter searched for an equaliser as he brought down Bernard’s cross-field pass, but the winger’s curling strike narrowly went over the bar.

The visitors doubled their lead in first half injury-time as Morris chested the ball down before drilling his half volley into the roof of the net.

There were few chances in the second half as Sean McLoughlin, who met Fleming’s corner delivery, saw his header saved by Bradley Collins, before the Tigers’ defender blocked Quina attempt later in the fixture.

The next big chance of the game fell to Tyler Smith as he was played through on goal by Slater. The 23-year-old sprinted towards goal, but his finish was blocked by the legs of the onrushing Collins. McLoughlin once again connected with a Fleming set-piece late on, but his shot was blocked by the Tykes’ defence.
