Hull City 1-2 Peterborough United: Match Report

24 October 2020

Hull City suffered a first home defeat of the season as they were beaten 2-1 by Peterborough United at the KCOM Stadium on Saturday.

The Tigers had taken a first half lead through Mallik Wilks, but the Posh hit back after the break as goals from Jonson Clarke-Harris and Siriki Dembele gave the visitors a fifth successive win.

Grant McCann made two changes to his starting eleven following the midweek win against AFC Wimbledon. Josh Emmanuel replaced the injured Lewie Coyle at right back, while Mallik Wilks came into the forward line in place of Hakeeb Adelakun who dropped to the bench. Jordy de Wijs returned from his recent illness to take a place amongst the substitutes.

A heavy downpour just before kick-off made for a really slick playing surface but it was a quiet opening ten minutes as both sides looked to settle.

Callum Elder picked up a booking for a challenge on Joe Ward after the City left-back had tried to get on the end of George Honeyman’s pass inside the Peterborough area, before a first real sustained spell of possession in the Posh half of the field threatened to bring a first chance of the afternoon but Keane Lewis-Potter’s cross to the far post was too deep.

Peterborough’s Nathan Thompson was booked for bringing down Josh Magennis as he led a home counter-attack while Wilks sent a shot high over the bar after creating a chance for himself on the edge of the area.

The Tigers were looking the better side and they took the lead in the 36th minute. Wilks advanced down the right before picking out Magennis in the box and, when he returned the ball, Wilks guided a shot into the bottom corner of the net.

It was a lead that the home side took into the break and beyond the hour mark, but Peterborough would level things up in the 63rd minute as Clarke-Harris got on the end of a right-wing cross to head past Matt Ingram who conceded for the first time on home soil this season.

Greg Docherty curled an effort just wide from 20 yards while Richie Smallwood saw a low effort turned wide by goalkeeper Christy Pym.

A double change saw Adelakun and Tom Eaves replace Lewis-Potter and Magennis before Wilks saw a deflected effort go wide via the post.

Peterborough took the lead 15 minutes from time. Ward broke away down the right and picked out Dembele on the edge of the area and his deflected shot looped into the net.

Adelakun’s deflected effort was well kept out by Pym at his near post while Eaves glanced Honeyman’s cross just wide.

Honeyman picked up a yellow during five minutes of added on time and there was no way back for McCann’s side.
