Hull City 0-1 Ipswich Town: Match Report

23 February 2021

Hull City suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Ipswich Town at the KCOM Stadium on Tuesday night.

James Norwood scored the only goal of the game 15 minutes in on a frustrating evening for the Tigers.

Despite coming off injured against Doncaster Rovers last Saturday, midfield duo George Honeyman and Greg Docherty were both fit to start against the Tractor Boys, although Grant McCann did make three changes elsewhere in his line-up.

Josh Emmanuel came in for Lewie Coyle at right back with the captain’s armband passing to Honeyman, Dan Crowley came in with Alfie Jones dropping to the bench, and Gavin Whyte started ahead of Josh Magennis who was also included amongst the substitutes.

It was a quiet start to the game, but Ipswich took a 15th-minute lead with the first chance of the evening. A long, diagonal ball over the top found Norwood inside the box and he applied a good finish low into the net.

The home side huffed and puffed in response, and missed a great chance to level when Keane Lewis-Potter shot wide from six yards out.

That was just about that in a first half when chances were few and far between. Mallik Wilks had appeals for a penalty turned down in added time as he tried to dance his way around the Ipswich back line, while Toto Nsiala was booked for the visitors for a wild challenge on Wilks.

There was a double change for the home side during the interval as Jones and Magennis replaced Whyte and Crowley.

It was a brighter start to the second half and some nice skill from Lewis-Potter took him away from his marker and to the edge of the box before a shot was deflected wide.

Wilks picked up a booking for a foul on Myles Kenlock, while Ipswich's Keanan Bennetts was cautioned for dissent.

Norwood went close to making it two for the visitors with a shot that went wide of Matt Ingram's near post, while at the other end a frustrating night for the home side continued as Wilks dragged a shot wide and then limped off late on.
